The Final Exam was a survival game created with Change The Ref and Webcore Games to turn the video game debate on its head. Instead of blaming games for violence, we used the medium to put players in the shoes of a defenseless student during a school shooting, making them feel the fear, urgency, and helplessness that too many students know in real life. To survive, players had to find five real gun control bills hidden inside the game, learning about policies that could help save lives and tagging politicians to demand action. What started as gameplay quickly moved beyond the screen, spreading through livestreams, news coverage, and conversations in Washington, D.C., where it helped inspire the introduction of bill S.595. The project became one of the most recognized ideas of the year, earning top honors at The One Show and helping Change The Ref become Non-Profit Client of the Year.
